kakishibu is an all-natural persimmon tannin dye produced and perfected in Japan since the 13th century.
kakishibu is a lighting collection Krishna developed to tell the story of kakishibu through light, sculpture, and art; utilizing the astringent persimmon's magical properties of strength, natural color, and water repellence to paint warm rich atmospheres with light.

gestural drawing explorations in kakishibu + light
harimi sconce
what was once an edo-period dustpan is now a bold, contemporary flame shaped by washi paper and colored by persimmon tannins.
the harimi dustpan is a classic washi paper + kakishibu design. It's both the original source of inspiration and the beginning of the kakishibu lighting family.
teardrop desk light
using a formed kakishibu washi 'reflector' to paint warm light throughout a space.
3 varying shades of kakishibu result in 3 different hues of warm light.
magnetic ball joints are used to make the reflector free flowing.
canopy light
early 'canopy' mockups
inspired by the form and ritual of burning incense sticks, canopy's base has three holes to support the reflector's arm on three varying angles.
canopy's reflector is 3' wide and is supported by a 3' tall arm.

Stork is a birdlike seat for work and play. Made for and inspired by my newborn nephew, Stone. The desk-stool typology was conceived from explorations in flexible learning for elementary school students. Storks break the grid of any space they land in, bringing warmth, play, and nature with them. The whimsical, animalistic Storks can flock together to create casual workspaces in offices, schools, cafés, or homes.

Intersect represents the interconnection of physical space and psychological social circles we share with our closest friends and family. During the first lockdowns of 2020, I was nostalgic for a time when friends and I gathered around a low table, sitting crisscrossed or seiza, playing board games for hours. Intersect is made up of 4 leaves providing 4 individuals with their own surface to eat, work, or play on. There is a lower storage level for concealing artifacts like board games and art materials. A small void in the middle of the 4 leaves affords unexpected sprouting arrangements.

Backwaters was a minimalist leather goods and slow lifestyle brand Krishna developed in his senior year of high school to connect with his Indian roots. He worked with artisans and tanneries in Chennai to develop the first piece. Beluga was the pilot product; a leather bag that converts from a slim tote to a strapped backpack. It emphasized moving forward with the essentials and leaving behind the superfluous.

Village rethinks the airplane cabin as a close-knit community in the sky. Village is a family of furniture and monuments designed to be customizable and pliable, allowing airlines to create spaces that are small or large, private or open, depending on the user groups and the size of the aircraft. This is a personal project Krishna developed and presented during his internship at Teague's revered aviation design studio located in Everett, Washington.

Home
A village is a close-knit community made up of homes.
A home can be adjusted to fit the needs and privacy of its residents.
The pliable mesh surface can be shaped to create localized, personal seats.
The mesh can also be unaltered, leaving a clean, open sofa for relaxing as a family.
